Esi- ja perusopetuksen aloittaa näinä päivinä 605 000 lasta ja nuorta. Lukuvuoden aikana tutkintotavoitteisen koulutuksen piirissä on 1 280 000 opiskelijaa. Suomi pärjää tulevaisuudessa vain korkealla osaamisella ja laadukkaan koulutuksen merkitys on suurempi kuin koskaan ennen.
Opinpolun alkua toivottavasti vahvistetaan tulevalla hallituskaudella, jolloin esiopetus laajennettaneen koskemaan 5-vuotiaita. Tällä hetkellä 22% viisivuotiaista ei ole varhaiskasvatuksen piirissä. Tässä joukossa on paljon lapsia, jotka erityisesti siitä hyötyisivät. Koko ikäluokan saaminen esiopetukseen tasaisi lasten erilaisista taustoista johtuvia oppimiseroja ja olisi merkittävä askel maassamme syntyneen eriarvoistumiskehityksen katkaisemiseksi.
Varhaiskasvatus on tutkitusti vaikuttavin koulutusmuoto. Sijoittamalla euron, saa yhteiskunta seitsemän euroa takaisin – inhimillisestä hyvästä puhumattakaan. Kuitenkin vain laadukas varhaiskasvatus on vaikuttavaa. Koulutusleikkaukset ovat kasvattaneet ryhmiä ja heikentäneet laatua. Ei riitä, että tuki toimii paperilla, sen on toimittava käytännössä lapsen kehityksen tukena.
Perusopetuslain mukaan esiopetuksessa jokaisella lapsella on oikeus saada tarvitsemaansa tukea välittömästi. Onkin kriittistä, että yli 70% esiopetuksen opettajista kokee, että tämä oikeus ei toteudu. Syyt ovat liika byrokratia ja resurssien puute. Enemmän kuin joka viides vastaaja kertoi, että osa-aikaista erityisopetusta ei ole ollut lapsille tarjolla esiopetuksessa koskaan. Joka kolmas kertoi, ettei lapsiryhmien koossa ole otettu huomioon tuen tarpeessa olevia. Perusopetuksen opettajista ja rehtoreista 3% pitää tuen resursseja riittävinä. Erityisopetusta onkin lisättävä kaikille kouluasteille.
Kauniista koulutuspoliittisista puheista on päästävä konkreettisiin vahvistamistoimiin perusrahoitusta nostamalla. On hyvä pitää mielessä, että perusopetuksen rahoituksessa pelkästään pohjoismaiselle keskitasolle pääseminen edellyttäisi Suomelta miljardin lisäsatsausta.
Nyt koulutyön taas alkaessa voimme myös tehdä asioita paremmin ilman kustannuksia. Perusopetuksen aloittaa tällä viikolla vajaat 63 000 lasta. On yhtä monta mahdollisuutta luoda toimiva yhteistyösuhde kodin ja koulun välille. Yhteispelillä luodaan molemminpuolista arvostusta oppilaan parhaaksi. Osallistumalla ja olemalla kiinnostunut lapsen koulunkäynnistä luodaan lapselle kuva koulutuksen tärkeydestä. Aktiivinen osallistuminen vanhempainiltoihin ja arviointikeskusteluihin auttaa molemminpuolisen ymmärryksen syntymisessä. Ongelmat on hyvä pyrkiä ratkaisemaan asianosaisten kesken rakentavasti ja mahdollisimman varhaisessa vaiheessa.
Oppilaan oman vastuun ottamista tulee läpi opintien vahvistaa. Vaatimustason on oltava sopivan tiukka. Koulussa ja kotona on uskallettava vaatia työntekoa sekä sinnikkyyttä, jotta jokaisella lapsella on mahdollisuus saavuttaa oma potentiaalinsa.
Suurin ansio siitä, että Suomi on menestynyt koulutuksessa, pienemmillä rahallisilla panostuksilla kuin kilpailijamaat, kuuluu opettajillemme.
