Tampere päätti karsia oppituntien määrää peruskoulussa. Luokilla 3–6 ollaan jatkossa valtakunnallisessa minimimäärässä, mikä on imagotappio koko kaupungille. Kun lapsi syntyy johonkin koulutusmyönteisempään kuntaan hän saattaa peruskoulun aikana saada yhden lukukauden verran enemmän opetusta kuin tamperelaislapsi, jolle tarjotaan vain minimitunnit. Koulutuksellinen tasa-arvo ei toteudu, sillä jatko-opinnoissa molemmat hakevat samoihin oppilaitoksiin.
Positiivista Tampereen päätöksessä on se, että säästynyt raha on syksyllä tarkoitus sijoittaa oppilaiden jakotunteihin, joilla opetusryhmiä voidaan jakaa pienemmiksi. Hienoa, että ryhmäkoko vihdoin nähdään tärkeänä asiana eikä enää tarvitse kiistellä sen merkityksestä koulutuksessa ja kasvatuksessa. Ongelmallista kuitenkin on, että jakotunnit on jo aiemmin leikattu Tampereelta(kin) lähes kokonaan. Nyt sitten leikataan opetuksesta, jotta voidaan saada edes vähän lisää jakotunteja. Ei voi välttyä vertaukselta satuun hölmöläisen peitonjatkamisesta.
Tampereelle tulee perusopetukseen ensi lukuvuodelle satoja oppilaita enemmän kuin tänä vuonna, ja opettajia on useita kymmeniä vähemmän. Tilanne on lapsille ikävä, kun samalla vielä leikataan opetuksen määrää. Huomionarvoista on, että opetustuntien leikkaus on tehty toistaiseksi ja panostus jakotunteihin vain vuodeksi. Pelkona on, että seuraavaksi leikkauslistalla ovat taas jakotunnit.
Oppilaiden vanhemmille olisi nyt kaunistelematta tunnustettava, että leikkauksilla on vaikutus opetuksen laatuun ja tamperelaisten lasten tulevaisuuteen. Valtion ryhmäkokorahojen leikkaus jätti ison loven perusopetuksen määrärahoihin. Osa kunnista on jo kuitenkin tehnyt arvovalinnan, jossa ryhmäkokorahat on korvattu kunnan omasta budjetista. Kuntavaalit ovat edessä alle vuoden päästä, ja silloin on kuntalaisilla taas mahdollisuus vaikuttaa arvovalintoihin.
Lisäbudjetti olisi ainoa vastuullinen ratkaisu Tampereen perusopetuksen tilanteeseen. Taloustilanne on tiukka, mutta koulutukseen ja kasvatukseen satsaaminen on sijoitus tulevaisuuteen ja tuottaa rahat moninkertaisesti takaisin.
