Suomalaiset tytöt ovat maailman parhaita lukijoita, mutta tyttöjen ja poikien välinen ero lukutaidossa on OECD-maiden suurin. Valtakunnallisen koululaiskyselyn mukaan suomalaislasten kiinnostus lukemiseen, kirjoittamiseen ja sanataiteeseen on valitettavan vähäistä. Myönteinen suhtautuminen lukemiseen synnyttää lukutaitoa tukevan positiivisen kehän. Lukutaidon ja kielellisen kehityksen kannalta lapsen ensimmäiset elinvuodet ovat erityisen tärkeitä ja jo vauvaiässä aloitetulla ääneen lukemisella on nähty olevan suuria hyötyjä niiden kehitykselle.
Kodin rooli lasten lukuinnon ja -taidon kehityksessä on ensisijainen. Kotitaustan lisäksi vanhempien omat lukutottumukset ja asenteet ovat erittäin merkityksellisiä lapsen lukuintoon. Esimerkin voima on suuri ja ensimmäinen askel saada lapsi lukemaan olisikin lukea itse. Vanhemmilta saatu tuki ja kannustus sekä vanhempien lukemiseen käyttämä aika näkyvät lapsen osaamisessa. Huolestuttavaa siten on, että entistä useampi suomalaisvanhempi ei itse pidä lukemisesta tai lue kovin paljon ja tämä voi periytyä.
Yksi tehokkaimmista keinoista vaikuttaa lapsen lukutottumuksiin on ääneen lukeminen. Tutkimuksessa päiväkotilasten vanhemmista reilu kolmannes äideistä luki 2–3-vuotiaille lapsille ja isistä alle neljännes. Etenkin poikien lukutottumusten muodostumisessa esikuvat ovat tärkeitä. Isän lukeminen vahvistaa poikien lukuintoa. Luonnollisesti myös muut läheiset voivat tarjota lapselle lukevan aikuisen roolimallin.
Hyvä lukutaito on myös yksi avaintekijä kiinnittymisessä yhteiskuntaan. Lukutaidon merkitystä arjessa ja työelämässä pärjäämiselle tulee korostaa keskusteluissa nuorten kanssa. Hyvä sanavarasto ja itseilmaisu auttaa pärjäämään erilaisissa tilanteissa. On tärkeää löytää nuoria kiinnostavia tekstejä ja tekstityyppejä. Jos kaunokirjallinen teos ei kerta kaikkiaan tunnu omalta, saattaa esimerkiksi rap-lyriikat silti kiinnostaa.
Lukutottumukset ovat murroksessa kaikenikäisillä ja aikaa kuluu yhä enemmän älylaitteiden kanssa. Ennen kaikkea pitkäjänteinen, syventävä lukeminen kehittää lukutaitoa ja sellaisia tekstejä olisi saatava tuoduksi niin sosiaaliseen mediaan kuin älypuhelimiin.
